Measuring for Glass tabletops

Below are directions for measuring furniture with rectangular, square, or circular tops. If your furniture top is another shape, you will need to make a pattern. Those directions are HERE. For more general information on glass tops, see the Frequently Asked Questions.

How to measure for a rectangular or square glass top.

1. Take dimensions for width and length.

The glass size you need is determined by the flat surface area of your furniture. See drawings for examples of where the flat surface typically ends in relation to the edge detail. It is very common for customers to measure larger than they need. We recommend stopping 1/16” short of the edges. It’s better for the top to be a little smaller than too large.

Measure both sides of the furniture surface along the width from edge to edge of where you want the glass to be. Measure to the nearest 1/16”.
Measure both sides along the length from edge to edge of where you want the glass to be. Measure to the nearest 1/16”.

2. Determine shape of corners.

For 90 degree corners:
If your furniture surface has 90 degree corners, you are done measuring. Call us with the dimensions for the width and length for a quote and/or to place an order. You will need to choose whether to keep the standard, more sharply defined 90 degree corners, or to have the corners softened just slightly. There is almost no discernible difference visually between the two, but you can feel that one is softer to the touch.

For radius corners:
If your furniture surface has radius corners, you need to determine the radius. If it is a small radius, you can place a dime, nickel, or quarter on it. If one of the coins matches the curve of the radius, let us know the top has a dime, nickel, or quarter size radius.
If the radius is larger, you’ll need to do a pattern of the radius and bring it to the showroom along with the overall glass top dimensions. Click HERE for directions on how to create a radius pattern. You’ll also need to let us know if all 4 corners or just 2 have a radius.

Materials:
• Kraft paper
• Painter’s tape (test on an inconspicuous area of your furniture to make sure it  won’t lift the finish)
• Scissors
• Carpenter’s or other thick pencil

1. Use plain, sturdy paper, such as the brown kraft paper you can find in a store’s office supply section. If you can’t find any, stop by our showroom and we’ll give you some. Do not use tissue paper, wrapping paper, or newspaper. They are not sturdy enough for a pattern.

2. Cut the paper large enough to cover the furniture surface or the area being patterned (such as a radius corner) and extend the paper over by at least 2” on all sides.

3. Cut small holes about 2” wide in the paper, approximately 12”-18” apart.

4. Place the paper on the surface, making sure the paper overhangs on all sides.

5. Place painter’s tape over the holes and onto the paper to secure the paper to the surface. If you would prefer not to use or can’t use tape on your furniture, you can place heavy objects, such as books, on the paper to secure it. It is critical that the paper be secured to the surface so it doesn’t move while you trace the pattern.

6. Holding your pencil at an angle, and gently holding down the paper near the edge, run the pencil along the edge. Be sure you make a sharp, crisp line for us to follow.

7. Print your name on the pattern.

8. Do not fold or cut the pattern! Roll the pattern up and secure it with tape or a loose rubber band to bring to the showroom.

If your furniture surface is difficult to trace because of its size, shape, or edge detail, take a picture and email it to us at info@clintonglasscompany.com. We’ll be happy to provide an estimate at no charge.
